ON FaCiNG FEARS...

FEAR (n) - an emotional state evoked by the threat of danger and usually characterized by unpleasant subjective experiences as well as physiological and behavioral changes.
-Medical / Surgical Dictionary

It is not unusual for people to develop fears. As we grow older, our fears grow bigger. And the more we understand the way things are and how things happen, the more we develop fears. Although fear is a vital response to physical and emotional danger [if we couldn't feel it, we couldn't protect ourselves from legitimate threats], we often fear situations that are in no way life-or-death, and thus hang back for no good reason.

I used to fear trying things alone. I was so afraid that if I fail, there'd be no one to talk about it with. I wouldn't go to the mall all by myself. I wouldn't ride the bus without a friend to sit beside me.I wouldn't apply for a job if nobody goes with me. I used to have an endless list of I-wouldn't-do-it-alone. That WAS my greatest fear.

Things changed when my "forever-companion-slash-friend" was hired---and I wasn't. The first thing that came to my mind was "who will be my companion now when  I want to apply for a job?" That question echoed in my mind for several days until I realized I was asking the wrong question. It should be something like, "where should my next stop be?" or "How many new friends will I gain in my next job hunt?"

The next morning when I woke up, I searched the internet for job openings. Luckily, I found one that matched my qualities. The company asked me to go to their office for examination. I went there-alone. I rode the bus for 3 1/2 hours, reached SM North EDSA and ate lunch there, then passed the overpass to the other side of the road. While walking, I thought to myself it wasn't bad at all to do things alone. That sometimes, we really have to break away from our fears and learn to face them with confidence and faith in God as ultimate weapons. Though I wasn't hired by the company, I am thankful to God because He helped me in my struggle to overcome my fear.

I did search and apply for other job. I met a lot of people and gained new friends. I am no longer afraid of doing things alone. =)

Currently, I work in a hospital where employees were new faces and once strangers to me. I live in a dormitory where I used to be alone in my room, but now I've got roomies. =)

In conclusion, it is normal to fear something. It makes us think before acting; thus, helping us realize that better things await when those fears are faced. It is not an easy task-yes, but keep in mind that we'll never accomplish anything if we live in fear. Maybe we'll fail and get hurt many times. Yet, exposing ourselves to our personal demons is the best way to move past them.
