Warm Bodies; Not Your Ordinary Zombie Story

Last Saturday, after work, I was able to watch Warm Bodies with my friend/colleague. We've been waiting for this movie to be shown since last year, after we read the book written by Isaac Marion. We were so eager to see it that we didn't mind the fact that we had to travel for an hour and a half just to get to the nearest mall where we could watch it! Bakit kasi hindi ito pinapalabas sa malalayong probinsyaaaa???

Me and Lovely :)

Warm bodies revolves around the story of R and Julie played by Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer respectively. "R" is a zombie himself. He is the one who narrates the story---which by the way, makes the movie more interesting. Unlike the other zombies, he doesn't enjoy much eating brains. And he loves riding escalators. :P

***Warning: Synopsis might contain spoilers. Skip if you think you should. Proceed with caution!***

***start of synopsis***
The movie opens just like how the book version started---R introducing himself, how he doesn't remember his real name and how he got there in the airport or why. He introduces the other zombies and makes fun of how their lives must have been when they are not zombies yet.

R has a bestfriend, M. Aside from talking incomprehensible words, their other hobby is hunting for living people. Zombies, according to R, don't really feel hungry. They just eat brains to get a glimpse of the person's memories---or dream of some sort. It was during one of their hunting escapades that R met Julie. He was able to know her name when he ate her boyfriend's brain. R fell in love with Julie and decided to save her from his fellow zombies. He brings her with him in his "home" and that is how their love-story-but-not-really started. That is also when they sparked something that caused the zombies to change---for the better. Who told you zombies are incapable of falling in love? :p
***end of synopsis***

If you have read the book, you'll notice the changes made to the movie. Minor edits here and there. Few revisions etcetera etcetera. It happens most of the time. However, for the last few minutes of the movie, starting from the moment when R entered the "camp", major changes were made. Yes, the changes gave more "juice" to the movie, but, still, it somehow (somehow lang) disappointed me. They cut scenes which I think are supposed to be there---like how R met his zombie wife, his children, story about Julie's mom, the zombie children's training on how to properly bite people, the scene in the pub, etc. They added ones that don't exist in the book! While watching, me and my friend are telling each other things like, "Wah! Wala namang ganun sa book ah?!" Haha. I know, it's not right to compare but we can't help it. *wink*

Overall, the movie is great and we enjoyed a lot! It is not a typical zombie story. You'll learn things about love and how you should go after what you want. How you should fight for what you believe is worth fighting for. How you should not just give up your dreams. How you should not limit people (or zombies, for the matter) on what they can do. How things are possible if you just open your mind and heart to them. And much more! See the movie for yourself. :)

Favorite quotes (just a few from the book):

“There is no ideal world for you to wait around for. The world is always just what it is now, and it's up to you how you respond to it.”

“Writing isn't letters on paper. It's communication. It's memory.”

“We are where we are, however we got here. What matters is where we go next.”

“Once you've arrived at the end of the world, it hardly matters which route you took.”

“If there are rules, we're the ones making them. We can change them whenever we want to.”

There you go! Have you read the book too? What do you think of the movie adaptation? Tell me in the comment box below!

  2. I say that is one weird movie. I like the premise of zombies eating brains just to get a glimpse of their victim's memories.

I don't expect much whenever I watch movies adapted from books. I expect the story to change very greatly once it hit the big screen. Sometimes I even avoid watching such movies because it spoil my imagination.
